The Bureau

MISSION —

The Bureau is a multidisciplinary creative media platform and studio.

Art, as an expression of love, provides one of the few avenues in which the imagination can be completely unbound. As such, our work utilizes photography and film, design and fashion, research and dialogue, exhibitions and creative experiences to weave the thread of our collective histories.

We believe creativity and collaboration are essential in cultivating a world that upholds the principles of morality and human potential. Our multi-disciplinary approach to storytelling allows for unique cross-category creative solutions that merge a refined visual aesthetic with the voices and perspectives of those often silenced and dismissed.

Our team includes creative directors, visual artists, designers, copywriters, poets, teachers, researchers, editors and poets.

We are a study of virtue
amidst collective precarity.
We are the everlasting imagination,
in beauty and in marvel.

HOW DID WE START?

The Bureau was started in Minneapolis in the wake of local and international uprisings sparked by the killing of George Floyd. The team coalesced to produce work that reflects the contemporary political, cultural and social needs of young, Black protesters demanding freedom. This work culminated in the launching of the Bureau’s first project titled, “Freedom Summer” capturing fiercely spirited portraits of the Minneapolis’ Black youth who sparked the largest uprising in U.S. history.

WHO IS ON OUR TEAM?

Our team includes visual artists, designers, teachers, producers, editors, lawyers and poets.

HOW ARE WE FUNDED?

We receive income from commissioned work, exhibits, apparel collection releases, collaborations, partnerships, and grants. Income generated from commissioned work or otherwise supports long-term art production, archival access and research. Clients funding our work or corporate commissioned pieces maintain no influence over the research and scope of the work.

HOW DO WE CHOSE OUR WORK?

In deciding our clients, subject matter or research, we consider first and foremost intellectual and creative honesty and rigor. We are primarily concerned with artistic explorations that allow for generative and rigorous engagement and the advancement of notions that support liberation and freedom of vulnerable communities.

Finally, we are interested in offering work that develops new modes of engagement and artistic production.
